The Rotary Club of Malda, established in 1985, has a rich history of community service and philanthropic endeavors. Its official charter from Rotary International occurred in Feb 28, 1986, under the leadership of Charter President Rtn (Prof.) Asit Dutta and Charter Secretary Rtn Kamalesh Behani along with 31 other Rotarians, marked the beginning of its structured contributions to the Malda district. Initially, the club held meetings at Hotel Samrat, providing a platform for planning and strategizing their charitable work. A significant milestone in the club’s development occurred in 1995 when Sri Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury, Chairman of the English Bazar Municipality, allocated space for their meetings at the Atul Chandra Market. This gesture, followed by the inauguration of a dedicated meeting hall in 1996 by Sri Chowdhury and then-President Rtn Kamalesh Behani, along with District Governor Rtn N.N. Dutta, solidified the club’s presence within the community and the Rotary network. This provided better accessibility for members and enhanced their capacity to organize and execute projects. The Rotary Club of Malda has consistently demonstrated its commitment to impactful philanthropy. A notable example is their contribution of Rs 500,000 to the Ganguria Saroda Mission through the Rotary Matching Grant program, highlighting their dedication to addressing community needs through financial support. Hosting the Rotary District Conference in 2002-2003 further showcased the club’s organizational strength and its role in fostering collaboration among Rotary Clubs in the region. Throughout its existence, the club has undertaken numerous benevolent and social initiatives, focusing on Rotary’s four avenues of service: Club, Community, Vocational, and International. Their projects have consistently aligned with Rotary’s core focus areas, addressing critical issues such as maternal and child health, literacy, sanitation, and environmental sustainability. This comprehensive approach demonstrates their understanding of the interconnectedness of community needs and their commitment to holistic development. As the Rotary Club of Malda approaches its 40th charter anniversary in 2026, it stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring impact of dedicated service. From its initial meetings at Hotel Samrat to its current multifaceted contributions, the club’s journey exemplifies the transformative potential of Rotary’s "Service Above Self" motto. The club’s legacy is not just a record of accomplishments, but an inspiration for future generations to embrace the spirit of giving and contribute to the betterment of their communities. The Rotary Club of Malda continues to foster a culture of benevolence, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of individuals and communities within the Malda district and beyond. The Rotary Club of Malda also boasts a distinguished membership, including 21 Paul Harris Fellows, 15 Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, and a Major Donor.
